A drums practice app for grooves and transitions

A groove can feel secure until the fill interrupts it. Drum practice is easier to review when the record identifies the pattern, its musical context and the point where coordination changes. Maestro Planner keeps that assignment beside the student’s account of what happened.

Make the count explicit

Write the groove or rudiment name and explain what the metronome pulse represents. Quarter-note and half-note clicks at the same BPM describe different practice setups. If a task uses a subdivision or a particular sticking, include it in the written assignment so the student has the same reference at home.

Track the return from the fill

Assign a short sequence such as three bars of groove and one bar of fill. Ask the student to note whether the next downbeat arrives comfortably, then log the tempo actually attempted. A note about losing the kick pattern or rushing the final fill notes can be more useful than a larger number with no description of the result.

An example week in the notebook

Illustrative teacher–student exchange, not a prescribed lesson or a customer result.

Teacher assigns
Repeat three bars of the lesson groove plus a one-bar fill. Focus on the first beat after the fill.
Student reports
Twelve minutes. Quarter note = 80 for the four-bar loop. The groove holds until I add the last two fill notes.
Teacher reviews
Hear the loop, shorten the fill if needed and compare how the return to the groove feels.

Before the next session

  • State the click’s beat unit.
  • Name the pattern and sticking when needed.
  • Record what happens after the fill, not just during it.

Is the metronome setting saved as an achieved tempo?

A metronome setting is not proof of performance. Maestro Planner asks students to confirm a tempo report, with its beat unit and optional passage, before using it in tempo history.
