A guitar practice app for changes, patterns and songs

Playing a chord in isolation and reaching it inside a song are different tasks. Guitar practice notes become more useful when they preserve that distinction. Maestro Planner lets a teacher assign a transition or pattern and read how it behaved in the student’s next session.

Write down the setup

Include the tuning, capo position or picking approach in the written instructions when it affects the task. Name the two chords in a change or the strings in a picking pattern. A familiar song title alone may leave a student repeating the easy parts while skipping the transition that was the point of the lesson.

Log the transition, then the context

Start with a short loop the teacher selected and describe what happens when it returns to the verse or chorus. A reported tempo should identify the exact loop and beat unit. Notes can distinguish a late fretting-hand change from a picking pattern that breaks down. That gives the teacher a concrete question without asking the student to diagnose technique alone.

An example week in the notebook

Teacher assigns
Loop the G-to-C change from the verse. Keep the agreed strumming pattern, then reconnect the preceding line.
Student reports
Ten minutes. The isolated change is cleaner, but the first upstroke disappears when I play the whole verse.
Teacher reviews
Hear the verse at a comfortable pace and decide whether to simplify the strum while reconnecting the change.

Before the next session

  • Include tuning or capo details when relevant.
  • Name the transition rather than only the song.
  • Note whether the difficulty changes in context.

Can I use this with tabs and my own teaching materials?

Assignments can include supporting materials and written directions. Use your own or appropriately licensed materials; Maestro Planner does not supply a guitar songbook or an automatic tab assessment service.
